Measure the fence and agree on access
Estimate length and height, share photos, and say who controls each side. Get neighbour permission where access or overspray protection crosses a boundary.
Loose boards or serious rot may need a repair before painting; ask whether those repairs are included or need another trade.
Ask for coating details
Compare washing, sanding, rust treatment or primer where relevant, number of coats, both sides and gate, plant protection, waste, weather delays and GST.

Can a fence be painted on one side only?
Yes, if that is the agreed scope and the coating suits the material. Specify the side in the quote.
Should a damaged fence be painted first?
Ask for the structure and surface to be assessed; paint will not repair rotten boards or loose posts.
