Tell the business your actual job suburb and the type of parking available. A private driveway, a garage reached through a shared lane and a basement apartment bay need different site information. Include access hours, height restrictions and any requirement to book a loading area or attend with a building manager.

You do not need to measure electrical capacity or open a switchboard; leave the technical assessment to the installer.

Ask the strata manager whether the building already has an EV charging policy, an energy assessment or shared charging infrastructure. Bring those documents to the installer rather than requesting an isolated charger without that context.

Clarify whether the proposal is for your allocated bay, a shared charger or infrastructure for several residents. Ask who can approve changes to common property, what documentation is needed and how electricity use will be paid for. An installer’s quote and owners corporation approval are separate parts of the process.

Compare the installation scope before comparing totals

Give each installer the same parking, vehicle and equipment brief. Ask the quote to identify the charger model, supply or installation-only scope, proposed mounting location and electrical work. Check whether a site assessment is included or charged separately, and how the price changes if the site differs from the initial description.

Ask for any switchboard work, cable-route work, surface repairs and access costs to be identified. Discuss solar compatibility or charging schedules if those features matter to you. Confirm what hardware, internet connection or ongoing software fees the proposed setup needs, rather than assuming every smart charger offers the same functions.

For an apartment, check whether the figure covers only your charger or also a share of common infrastructure. Keep building works, equipment, installation and continuing fees distinguishable. Compare GST, exclusions and variation approval on the same basis; a simple home package may not cover a shared basement installation.

Check the NSW licence and completion paperwork

Check the installer’s current NSW electrical licence and confirm who will do the work. NSW Government guidance says electrical installation work must be performed by a licensed electrician and that the customer should receive a Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work, usually shortened to CCEW. Ask how you will receive yours.

Keep the certificate with the invoice, charger model information and instructions. Ask who handles an equipment fault, who handles an installation issue and how to arrange follow-up. If the work involves another contractor or a building manager, agree those responsibilities before accepting the quote.
