    Give the installer your actual Sydney suburb, parking position, vehicle and charger model, and any height or access restrictions. Photograph the space from a safe position; the electrician assesses capacity.

    For a slow charge the NSW Government says you can plug into a normal power point. For a wall charger, which it calls level 2, it says “hire an electrician to install a wallbox”, and to get quotes from licensed electricians with EV charger experience.

    Help with the cost, the NSW Government offers homeowners and landlords a zero-interest loan of up to $15,000 for an EV charger or other eligible technology, for Australian citizens or permanent residents with a combined household taxable income up to $210,000 (read 26 October 2026). Check it is still open before you count on it.

    Tell the installer where the car parks, how far that is from the switchboard, the car and charger if you have them, and whether you have solar, then compare quotes on the same scope.

    EV chargers for apartments in Sydney

    In a Sydney apartment the owners corporation decides, because the cable and the power run through common property. NSW treats a charging installation as a sustainability infrastructure upgrade, and the NSW Government says it goes ahead if ‘less than 50% are against the resolution’, where the owners corporation has a 10 year capital works fund.

    So ask the strata manager or the secretary of the strata committee first. The state says owners “must contact the owners corporation for approval to connect any EV charging equipment”. Renting, it says tenants must seek the landlord’s approval, and the landlord takes it to the owners corporation. In most cases the owner or tenant pays for the charger itself.

    Then bring in an installer who has done shared parking, give them the bay, building access and the strata manager’s contact, and ask about load control if more than one car will charge.

    Compare the installation scope before comparing totals

    Compare charger supply, mounting, cable route, switchboard work, access, surface repairs, testing, GST and any software fees. For an apartment, separate the individual charger from common infrastructure.

    Check the NSW licence and completion paperwork

    Check the NSW electrical licence and ask who will provide the Certificate of Compliance for Electrical Work. Keep it with the invoice and charger details.

    Can I arrange a charger for my Sydney apartment bay?

    Explain that before requesting a home installation. Do not assume an ordinary driveway or garage quote covers a public footpath or kerbside space. Check public charging options and any relevant council arrangements separately.
