    What should an EV charger installation quote include?

    State whether you need charger supply or installation of a unit you own. Compare the model, mounting, cable route, switchboard assessment, load management if needed, testing, setup, GST and exclusions. Ask how site changes and extra work are approved.

    Start by asking whether you need a wall charger at all. The Victorian Government says a standard 230 volt power point gives 14 to 21 kilometres of range an hour, and the average Victorian drives about 38 kilometres a day, so 3 or 4 hours plugged in covers most days. It also passes on the Electric Vehicle Council’s advice to put the car on its own circuit.

    A wall charger, which the state calls level 2, gives 42 to 65 kilometres an hour for most cars. It needs its own circuit and a wall box, and the cost depends on your home, the wiring and sometimes a switchboard upgrade. Most Victorian houses are single phase, and single phase level 2 meets most people’s daily driving. Renting, talk to your rental provider before you book anyone.

    EV chargers for apartments

    In an apartment the owners corporation decides, because the cable, the power and often the bay are shared. The Victorian Government asks owners corporations to weigh the building’s electrical capacity, parking arrangements, current and future demand, money and what lot owners need, and its EV ready guide for owners corporations was updated on 29 September 2026.

    So ask the owners corporation or building manager first whether it has an EV plan, what approval your bay needs and how the power will be billed. Then bring in an installer who has done shared parking, give them the bay, building access and the owners corporation contact, and ask about load management if more than one car will charge.

    Choosing a charger without guessing the electrical work

    Share your vehicle and charger model, if chosen. Ask whether the equipment is compatible with your car and what the property’s electrical capacity can support. Include solar integration or a second EV only if those features affect this installation.

    Before booking an installer in Victoria

    Check the attending electrician’s Victorian licence with Energy Safe Victoria and ask for the Certificate of Electrical Safety. For shared parking, settle owners corporation approval before booking work on common property.

    It may be possible, but the parking arrangement, electrical capacity and owners corporation approval need to be considered. Start with the building manager and ask an installer experienced in shared parking to assess the proposal.

    That depends on the existing electrical installation and proposed charger. Ask the electrician to assess it and explain any extra work in the quote. An EV charger enquiry does not automatically mean a full board replacement.
