Confirm a Melbourne callout before booking
Start the call with your actual suburb, the problem you have observed and whether the property currently has power. Ask whether the business handles that kind of job and can attend your address. A Melbourne business address or advertised emergency service does not establish who is available to travel now.
Ask for an attendance window and a contact method if the timing changes. For an apartment, mention building access, parking restrictions and who can let the electrician into shared areas. For a shop or workplace, identify the person who can authorise the visit and any site access requirements.
Avoid booking several urgent visits for the same problem. If you have already arranged attendance, tell any other business you contact. Use a quote request for comparing planned repair scopes or follow-up work when waiting for a response is appropriate.
Melbourne outage: distributor or electrician?
Your electricity distributor maintains the local network; your retailer sells electricity and sends the bill. For a reported network outage, check the distributor’s information. The Victorian Government’s distributor finder lists CitiPower for the city and inner suburbs, with other distributors covering different parts of metropolitan Melbourne.
Use the faults number on your own bill or the official finder rather than assuming every Melbourne property uses the same distributor. Tell the distributor if only part of your supply is affected. In a managed apartment building, also ask the building manager about shared supply and access arrangements.
For a separate fault within the property, describe the problem to a licensed electrician. The questions on this page choose a contact route and prepare a brief; they cannot establish whether the network, a circuit or an appliance caused the problem.
What does the callout charge include?
Before agreeing to a visit, ask for the callout charge, how much assessment time it includes and whether GST is included. Ask about after-hours charges, minimum labour time and travel costs for your suburb. Confirm how additional investigation time is approved and charged.
Separate the initial attendance from any repair quote. Ask the electrician to explain the findings and proposed work before you approve extra work. If a temporary repair is proposed, clarify what remains to be done and how a later visit will be arranged.
Keep the agreed scope, charges and booking details together. When comparing follow-up quotes, give each business the same description and any written findings from the first visit. This page does not publish a universal emergency rate or promise that a particular repair will be completed during the initial callout.
Check the electrician and arrange access
Energy Safe Victoria says household electrical work belongs with a licensed electrician. Ask who will attend and how to check their Victorian electrical licence and the contractor’s registration. Confirm what completion paperwork will apply to the work, and keep it with the invoice.
If you rent, contact the property manager or nominated urgent-repairs contact about arranging attendance and access. If you live in a shared building, explain whether the affected equipment is inside your home or in a common area, without opening equipment to find out. These questions do not decide payment responsibility.
Share only observations you already have. There is no need to open a switchboard, test damaged fittings or reproduce the fault for this enquiry. For an immediate emergency, use emergency services rather than waiting for a marketplace response.
Use the listings for contact or planned repair quotes
The cards use live Yamate directory results around Melbourne. This page shows matches whose business websites advertised emergency electrical work when checked on 21 September 2026. That establishes the advertised service, not current availability or a completed licence check. Confirm your suburb and requirements directly.
Use Contact on website to find the business’s current phone details. Where the directory supplies a public phone number, the card can show a Call link instead. The quote control uses the existing Yamate request flow: select businesses, review your job and recipients, then choose whether to send.
The optional answers travel with your request. Include the actual job suburb and any access arrangements when reviewing it. If you report an area outage, the distributor contact route appears first; you can return to electricians for a separate property assessment. No result means no matching live listing, not a fictional replacement.
Still not sure who to call? Ask in Who Do I Call? Australia, our free Facebook group. Post the problem, a photo and your suburb, and the tradies in there can point you right.
Good questions. Plain answers.
Can Yamate send an emergency electrician now?
Yamate does not dispatch electricians. Phone a business directly and confirm attendance. For fire, smoke or immediate danger, move away and call 000.
Are all the businesses available 24 hours?
The businesses shown advertised emergency work when checked. Availability, service area and attendance time must be confirmed with the business when you call.
Why does this page show Melbourne without asking for my suburb?
The search already names Melbourne, so local results load immediately. Give the business your actual job suburb before agreeing to a visit; the search location is not your job address.
Who do I contact if the distributor reports an outage?
Use your electricity distributor’s outage or faults contact. The Victorian Government finder and the faults number on your bill identify the relevant company.
Can I send one request to several electricians?
Yes, for work where waiting for replies is appropriate. Select the businesses, review the brief and consent, then send one request. It does not book an emergency visit.
Do repeated trips mean I need a switchboard replacement?
The symptom alone does not establish the repair. Ask for an assessment and the findings before agreeing to a replacement. The repeated-tripping guide below helps you describe the problem.
