Safety switch tripping, what it means

A safety switch tripping means it found current leaking where it should not and cut the power. Queensland’s Electrical Safety Office puts it plainly, “Safety switches protect you from electric shock. They turn off the electricity within milliseconds when a current leak is detected.” So the trip is the switch working, the leak is the job for the electrician.

Safety switch or circuit breaker, look for the button. The safety switch is the one with a button marked ‘T’ or ‘test’, the Electrical Safety Office’s own way to spot it. Tell the electrician which one dropped, or say Not sure.

Check the licence of whoever attends, ask for the finding in writing, and whatever the fix is, electrical work comes with a compliance certificate in every state, ask for yours. A repeated trip on its own does not mean a new switchboard, ask for the inspection finding first.
