Who should investigate a tripping safety switch?
Start with an electrician who offers fault investigation. Explain that the problem is repeated tripping and ask whether they take this kind of job. A listing under electrical services is a starting point for an enquiry, not confirmation of a particular business’s availability or specialist equipment.
The Electrical Safety Office explains that safety switches and circuit breakers have different functions and can be confused. If you are unsure which device has tripped, say so. The electrician can identify the equipment during the assessment; you do not need to remove covers or identify wiring for this page.
Ask for an investigation before assuming the whole switchboard needs replacement. If repairs or an upgrade are proposed after the assessment, ask what was found, what work is required and what options are included in the quote. Our separate switchboard upgrade page is for planning that work once its scope is known.
What information should I include?
Describe the pattern you have already observed: approximate dates, frequency, the rooms affected and whether it happened during normal use of an appliance or after rain. If it has happened only occasionally, include that rather than guessing a cause. The form carries these observations into your enquiry automatically.
Explain whether power is currently unavailable and how the problem affects the household. If you need someone urgently, call directly to discuss attendance. A business shown in results may be closed, booked out or unable to travel to your property; sending a request does not reserve a visit.
Supply photographs only if they can be taken from a normal safe position. Do not open equipment or reproduce the fault for a photograph. If a business asks for more information, agree what can be provided safely and what needs an in-person assessment.
What should I ask before booking?
Ask whether there is a callout or assessment fee, what time it covers, whether GST is included and how additional investigation time is charged. Confirm the proposed attendance window and any cancellation conditions. A quote for investigation may be separate from the eventual repair because the scope has not yet been established.
Ask who will attend and how you can check the relevant electrical licence. Owner verified on a Yamate card means the owner has proved control of the listing; it does not establish their electrical licence or the quality of their work. Check the applicable state or territory register and confirm the scope directly.
Before approving repairs, ask for the findings and proposed work in writing. Confirm which parts, labour and follow-up are included and which completion documents apply. Keep the assessment, quote and invoice together so there is a clear record if you need a later visit.
What if I rent or live in a strata property?
Contact the property manager or owners corporation and explain what has happened. Ask who should arrange the electrician, how access is organised and who can authorise the work. Rules and responsibilities differ by property and jurisdiction; this page does not decide who must pay.
Share any existing job reference or arranged visit with the business before making a second booking. In an immediate emergency, contact emergency services rather than waiting for a quote response. For an outage that appears to affect neighbouring properties as well, check your electricity distributor’s outage information.
Choose electricians and send the brief once
Choose your suburb and the observations above to see local directory results. You can select up to six businesses, review the recipients and send one request. The answers and suburb are included, so you do not need to retype the same brief for every selected electrician.
Use Save to keep a private shortlist, or open a listing to read its details. Changing the job or suburb clears the previous quote selection so you can choose businesses for the revised enquiry. If no results appear, try a nearby suburb or browse the directory; this page never fills gaps with fictional businesses.
Good questions. Plain answers.
Does repeated tripping mean I need a new switchboard?
The symptom alone does not establish that. Ask an electrician to assess the problem and explain any proposed repair or replacement before you approve it.
What if I do not know whether it is a safety switch or circuit breaker?
Choose Not sure and describe the loss of power you noticed. An electrician can identify the device during the assessment.
Can the questions diagnose the cause?
No. They collect observations for an electrician and keep the enquiry relevant. A site assessment may be needed to establish the cause and repair scope.
Is a quote request an emergency booking?
No. If you need urgent attendance, phone a business and confirm that they can attend. For fire or immediate danger call 000.
