What to tell the business
Share the room, when the leak appears, any bathroom or roof above it, and photos taken from a safe position. Ask what the first visit costs and whether it includes finding the source or only quoting a repair.
Water stain on the ceiling but nothing is dripping
An old brown ring that never changes is usually history, a leak someone already fixed. Pencil around its edge and watch it through a couple of wet weeks. If it grows or darkens it is live and the routing above applies. If it stays put it is a paint job, stain blocker then ceiling paint, no trade needed beyond a painter.
Two clues change who you call. A stain that moves with rain points at the roof. One under a bathroom that changes on shower days points at the plumbing.

Should I call a plasterer first?
Describe the water leak and ask for its source to be assessed before arranging cosmetic ceiling repairs. Repairing the visible finish alone does not establish that the water problem has been resolved.
What if I cannot tell where the water comes from?
Choose Not sure. The page keeps plausible trade categories visible rather than pretending it has identified the cause. Ask a business about an investigation.
What if the ceiling is sagging or the water is near electricity?
Keep away from the affected area and seek appropriate urgent assistance. Do not wait for an ordinary directory enquiry where there is immediate danger.
Can I just paint over a water stain?
Once you are sure it is dead, yes, that is the whole fix. Painting over a live leak buys you a few weeks and a bigger repair.
