In New South Wales, NSW Fair Trading licenses plumbing, draining and gasfitting work, and the licence check runs through Service NSW. The NSW Government page says you need a licence or certificate to do any plumbing, draining or gasfitting work regardless of the cost of the work, residential, commercial or industrial, so there is no small-job threshold. The types it names are an individual contractor licence, a company or partnership contractor licence, a qualified supervisor certificate, a tradesperson certificate and a provisional tradesperson certificate. A contractor licence is the one that lets a person or company contract with you for the work; certificate holders do the work under a licensed contractor. Gasfitting is its own category on that page, separate from plumbing and draining, so the licence has to name it before gas work starts.
