Data Cabling Electrician

For new Ethernet points, structured data cabling or a customer-side socket repair, use a registered cabler with the competencies for the work. Some electricians also hold cabler registration, but an electrical licence alone is not enough for telecommunications cabling.     What registration should I check?

    ACMA says customer communications cabling must be performed or supervised by a registered cabler. The registration category and any additional competency must match the particular work, especially structured Cat 5/6, fibre, coaxial, aerial or underground cabling. Ask to see current registration rather than assuming a business name or electrical licence proves it.

    A cabler can install, repair and maintain customer-side sockets and data cables; it cannot do NBN- or carrier-owned cabling. ACMA says a cabler must give the customer a written compliance statement after the work. Ask for it in the quote and keep it with your property records.

    Compare data cabling scopes

    Tell businesses the number and location of points, existing modem or rack position, wall access and any plans. Ask whether the quote covers cable and socket type, route, patching, testing, labelling, compliance statement, GST and making good. For a renovation, confirm the rough-in and final testing stages.

    Can any electrician install data cabling?

    No. An electrician performing regulated customer communications cabling also needs the applicable ACMA cabler registration and competencies.

    Can a private cabler repair NBN equipment?

    No. Contact your internet provider about NBN-owned equipment or a whole-service fault; a registered cabler handles customer-side cabling.

    What should I get when the job is finished?

    Ask for testing information and the written compliance statement required for the cabling work.
