How Yamate collects business information

Last updated 9 September 2026. This is version 1 — when it changes, the previous version stays available and is linked here.

Why you are reading this

Yamate is an Australian trade directory. We build listings for trade businesses so that people looking for a plumber, electrician or builder in their area can find one.

We may hold a listing for your business that you did not create. This page explains how we got the information, what we do with it, and how to change or remove it. If you would rather just have it taken down, skip to how to remove your listing.

What we collect, and where from — APP 5.2(b)

We collect business information from sources that are already public:

We read pages automatically. We respect robots.txt, and we do not attempt to get past CAPTCHAs, login pages or any other measure a site uses to limit automated access.

We record when we collected each detail and the page address we found it on.

What we do with it — APP 5.2(d)

We do not publish the email address or phone number we found on your website or your public business profiles. They stay hidden unless and until you claim your listing and choose to show them. We do not sell, rent or licence your details to anyone, and we do not build lists about you for anybody else.

There is one exception and it is worth being clear about: if your listing came from the QBCC licensed-contractor register, it shows the phone number published on that register, because that is a detail the regulator publishes itself.

Who we give it to — APP 5.2(f)

Nobody. Your contact details are not disclosed to other businesses, advertisers or data brokers.

The only exception is the ordinary one: the service providers who run our systems on our behalf, under contract, and only so the service works —

Separately, when a customer sends you a job request, they consent to their own name and contact details being given to you. That is their information, not yours.

Is this required by law? — APP 5.2(c)

No. No Australian law requires us to collect this. We do it to build the directory.

What happens if we do not hold it — APP 5.2(e)

Nothing happens to you. Your business would not appear in the directory, so customers searching here would not find you and you would not receive quote requests through us. There is no other consequence.

Overseas — APP 5.2(i) and (j)

Our database and the directory itself run on servers in Sydney, Australia.

Some of the other services we use are run by overseas companies, and information may be handled outside Australia when those services run — website hosting, email delivery, and the AI model that reads a customer's job description. We are confirming exactly where each of those sits and will name the countries here when we have it. If that matters to you before then, email privacy@yamate.au and we will tell you what we know.

Seeing, fixing or removing your listing — APP 5.2(g)

See and fix it yourself. Claim your listing and you can edit your details, services and service area directly, and choose whether to display your contact details. Changes appear on your public listing, and a later update will never overwrite something you have entered.

Claiming is not switched on yet. Until it is, use the route below — it works today and it does not need an account.

Or ask us. You do not need an account:

You can ask us to tell you what we hold about you, correct it, or remove the listing. We respond within 30 days, and usually much sooner.

How to remove your listing

Email privacy@yamate.au with your business name and website. You do not have to give a reason.

We will send a one-time code to a contact point already on your listing — an email address at your own domain, or the phone number shown — so we can confirm the request is coming from the business. We do this because we have to be satisfied a request is genuine, and because otherwise anyone could remove anyone's listing. If none of those still work, tell us and we will find another way. We will not leave you unable to complete it.

Once confirmed, we remove the listing and keep a record of the removal so it does not come back the next time we update the directory.

If you only want us to stop contacting you, say so and we will stop straight away — no code, no confirmation, nothing to complete.

Complaints — APP 5.2(h)

If you think we have mishandled your information, tell us at privacy@yamate.au. We will acknowledge within 5 business days and respond within 30 days, in writing, with what we found and what we did.

If you are not satisfied, you can complain to the Office of the Australian Information Commissioner: oaic.gov.au · 1300 363 992 · GPO Box 5288, Sydney NSW 2001.
