What a plumber in Tasmania has to hold
In Tasmania, Consumer, Building and Occupational Services licenses plumbers. The CBOS page says plumbing work, from design and installation through repair, testing and removal, requires a licence, and that a standard plumbing licence covers the Water, Sanitary, Drainage and Roof (Stormwater) streams, which it shortens to WSDR. The categories it names are practitioner, certifier, contractor and provisional. A practitioner licence is what anyone doing the work needs, employees included. A certifier licence, at Certificate IV level, is needed to certify the work. A contractor licence is needed to sell plumbing services to the public, and every contractor has a nominated manager at certifier level who is responsible for certifying that the work meets the standards. A provisional licence is for overseas-trained plumbers. Gas-fitting is a separate CBOS licence with its own practitioner, contractor and provisional categories. Ask for the contractor licence number and check it on the CBOS search before a deposit.

Ask for the licence number and check it on the register before any money changes hands. It takes two minutes and it saves more than anything else you will do on the job. Ask for a written quote, not a number on the phone. A quote has to say what the work is, what it costs, what is not included, and how long it holds. Ask whether the price includes GST. A registered business has to say. Ask what happens if they find something else once the wall is open. The honest answer is a variation in writing before the extra work starts, not a bigger bill at the end. And ask for the deposit terms. A deposit is normal. A deposit with no written quote behind it is not. If any of those questions gets a shrug, that is your answer.
