What an electrician in Victoria has to hold
In Victoria electrical licensing sits with Energy Safe Victoria, not the building regulator. Energy Safe says it licences and registers all electrical tradespersons, a requirement to do electrical work in Victoria. There are two tickets. An A Grade electrician's licence lets the holder do electrical installation work without supervision, but does not allow them to contract for that work for profit or reward. For that the business must be a Registered Electrical Contractor, an REC, which Energy Safe describes as a person in the business of electrical contracting, or offering to contract. So the business you pay holds an REC registration and the person on the tools holds a licence. The REC is responsible for the work it is engaged to do and must ensure a certificate of electrical safety is issued for all work carried out. Ask for it when the job is done. Check the REC number and the licence on the public register before a deposit.
