What an electrician in the Northern Territory has to hold
In the Northern Territory electrical licensing sits with the Electrical Safety Regulator inside NT WorkSafe. The old Electrical Workers and Contractors Licensing Board was abolished on 1 July 2024, and a licence issued under the old Act stays valid until its expiry date, so a card can still carry the old name. NT WorkSafe lists four licence types: unrestricted electrical work, restricted electrical work, electrical contractor and in-house electrical. Doing the work and running the business are two tickets. A business needs an electrical contractor licence if it performs electrical work for a fee or employs a licensed electrical worker who does, and a sole trader, a partnership or a company can hold it. All electrical work a contractor does must be performed or supervised by a nominated person on the licence. What to ask before you say yes
Ask for the licence number and check it on the register before any money changes hands. In most states the business holds a contractor licence and the person on the tools holds their own, so ask which one you are looking at. Ask what paperwork you get when the job is done. Some states require a compliance or safety certificate, and it is yours to keep. Ask for a written quote, not a number on the phone. It has to say what the work is, what it costs, what is not included, and how long it holds. Ask whether the price includes GST. A registered business has to say. Ask what happens if they find old wiring behind the cover. The honest answer is a variation in writing before the extra work starts. And ask for the deposit terms.
