Nothing you type here is sent anywhere or saved. It is all worked out in your own browser. Close the tab and it is gone — which also means refreshing loses it, so copy the brief before you go.

Why the same job gets three different prices

It is rarely that one tradie is dearer. It is that the three of them are quoting three different jobs, because each one asked a slightly different set of questions and got a slightly different set of answers — or asked nothing and guessed.

The things that move a price most are the things easiest to leave out: whether there is access down the side, what is behind the wall, whether the ground slopes, who is taking the old one away. A tradie who assumed the easy version will look cheapest right up until the day they arrive.

What a good brief does for you

  • Makes the quotes comparable. Same information in, same job quoted, differences you can actually read.
  • Saves you repeating yourself to every tradie who calls back.
  • Gets you taken seriously. A written brief says you know what you want, and tradies quote sooner for people who are easy to quote for.
  • Reduces the surprises. Most variations on a job come from something nobody mentioned at the start.
📸 Photos do more than words. The brief lists what to photograph for your job. Three or four clear shots will answer questions a paragraph cannot, and they let a tradie give you a realistic number without a site visit.

Answering honestly beats answering fully

Every question here is optional, and "no idea" is a genuinely useful answer — it tells a tradie to come and look rather than assume. Guessing is what causes trouble: a made-up measurement is worse than a blank, because the quote gets built on it.

The brief lists anything you skipped at the bottom, on purpose. A tradie reading it can see exactly what is known and what is not, instead of wondering whether a missing line means "no" or means "did not say".

What to do with it

  1. Copy the brief, or print it and save it as a PDF.
  2. Send it to two or three tradies — text, email, whatever suits.
  3. Attach the photos it asks for.
  4. Ask each of them to quote against it, and to say in writing anything they are excluding.

Is this free, and do I have to sign up?

It is free and there is no sign-up. No email box, no account, no download gate. You answer the questions, the brief appears, and you copy or print it.

What happens to what I type?

Nothing. The page does not send your answers anywhere and does not save them — it is all worked out in your own browser, and closing the tab is the end of it. Refreshing clears it too, which is the honest trade-off of not storing anything.

Can I send this to tradies who do not use Yamate?

Yes, and that is the point. It is a plain document. Send it to as many tradies as you like, however you like, whether or not any of them have heard of us. Nobody is charged for receiving it, and you are not signed up to anything.

Will this tell me what the job should cost?

No. It does not estimate prices. What it does is make sure the tradies you ask are all quoting on the same information, which is what makes their answers comparable.
